Practical parenting tools

Practical tools for parents who keep shouting at their kids and want to stop.

Because "stay calm" is easy advice to give and impossible to follow when the day has already been a lot, the kids are loud, and you've had nothing left to give since before breakfast. So here's something that actually works.

Let's be honest for a minute

It was never about patience or willpower.

You already know you want to stop. You've probably already tried. And it isn't because you don't love your kids, or don't care enough to change. Nobody lies awake replaying it because they don't care.

Sometimes it's full shouting. Sometimes it's the huffing, the sighing, the sharp "will you JUST stop." Maybe it's most days, maybe it's every few weeks and those days you feel like you've had a personality transplant.

You don't have to be losing it daily to want this to change.

It's about what you were never taught, or what happens when everything has already been a lot and you can't reach the thing you know. Some parents were never shown these skills. Some have them and can't get to them when it matters. Both are fixable.

You've read the books. You follow the accounts. You've googled it more times than you'd admit. And it still keeps happening, because you can't build a working system out of scattered advice while you're spinning a hundred plates. This is where I come in. I'm Nicola, a psychologist and mum of two, and I help you break the cycle without having to overhaul who you are.

We're not aiming for perfect.

We're aiming for good enough, more often.

Dr Nicola Sutton

Hey there

Hi, I'm Dr Nicola Sutton

I'm an award-winning psychologist and an NHS clinical lead. I'm also a mum of two who used to shout at my kids more than I'd like to admit.

For eleven years I've helped people understand why they get stuck in patterns they can't seem to change. Then I had my own children, and found out the hard way that knowing what to do and being able to do it, in the moment, with the people you love most, are two very different things.

That gap is exactly what I help you close.

You're not the only one.

T

"I've tried so many other things to stop yelling. This is the only thing that has helped. On day one I counted 15 near-yelling moments. By the end of the week it was once or twice."

Tess

C

"I actually followed your advice on how best to apologise after shouting. I didn't over-explain and it was effective, it shut the situation down quickly. Thank you."

K

"Yours has by far been the most beneficial account I've followed for understanding myself better."
